Did you know that black dogs are often overlooked in shelters even though they’re just as loveable as dogs of any other color? This is known as Black Dog Syndrome (BDS), and it’s a phenomenon where potential adopters pass by black dogs in favor of lighter colored ones.
Why does this happen?
It’s not completely clear, but some theories include:
- Breed stigma: People may associate black dogs (especially larger breeds like put bulls) with aggression, thanks to movies and TV.
- Photography woes: Black dogs can be harder to photograph, and lighter dogs tend to stand out more in shelter photos.
- Myths & superstition: Historically, black animals have been linked to bad luck or negative folklore, and these old stories may still linger.
As a result, black dogs tend to stay in shelters longer and are more likely to be euthenized.
